Day 4 Admonition 2. The Evil Of Self-will. The Lord God said to Adam: “You can eat of every tree of paradise". But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil thou shall not eat.” 1Adam therefore might eat of every tree of paradise and so long as he did not offend against obedience he did not sin. For one eats of the tree of knowledge of good who appropriates to himself his own will 2 and prides himself upon the goods which the Lord publishes and works in him and thus, 3 through the suggestion of the devil and transgression of the commandment, he finds the apple of the knowledge of evil; wherefore, it is proper that he suffer punishment.Gen. 2. 16-17. To which, namely, he has no right after religious profession, having relinquished his will by the vow of obedience. Two people and one commandment. How hard can it be? Adam and Eve had every tree but one in the garden to feast upon. They were forbidden to eat the fruit of the Tree of knowledge of good and evil. They kept the law and did not sin just as long as they didn't eat of the fruit of this tree. Francis accuses the temptation of the devil for giving our first parents the idea to sin. Just so - If a brother or sister, today, eats the fruit of the knowledge of good they do so because they choose so to do; they choose disobedience. When, after doing so they further boast about their good works as though they are their own works, rather than the Lord working through them; then with their pride they discover for themselves the fruit of the knowledge of evil. And because they have sinned against obedience they cease to have the right of religious profession. To which, namely, he has no right after religious profession, having relinquished his will by the vow of obedience. |
